Lightning struck a Lakewood golf course on Tuesday, sparking a fire and sending one golfer to the hospital, according to West Metro Fire Rescue.

West Metro officials first reported the lightning strike at the Fox Hollow Golf Course, 13410 W. Morrison Road, in Lakewood’s Ward 5 shortly before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The lightning struck a pocket of dead and dry fuel in a “rough” area of the golf course, sparking a fire that slowly spread across 2 acres — 87,120 square feet — before it was contained, according to the agency.

Paramedics took one person who was struck by lightning near the golf course’s sixth hole to the hospital, West Metro officials said.
Firefighters stayed at the scene of the fire for several hours after it was contained, monitoring for pockets of heat and potential flare-ups. Video posted by the fire department showed crews soaking the burn area and still-smoking embers well after sunset.
“The flames may get the attention, but mop-up is one of the most important parts of fighting a wildland fire,” West Metro officials wrote on social media. “Firefighters move methodically through the burned area, digging into ash, pulling apart smoldering logs and brush, and extinguishing hidden pockets of heat. Even a single ember left behind can reignite if conditions are right.”
