Colorado man arrested in suspected vandalism ‘became unresponsive’ after police confrontation

A man arrested in a suspected vandalism in western Colorado was hospitalized after a confrontation with Mesa County sheriff’s deputies early Saturday, the Grand Junction Police Department said.

The encounter started at 12:08 a.m. when deputies responded to a 911 call about a vandalism in progress at a Maverik gas station off of Interstate 70 between Grand Junction and Palisade.

The caller said a man damaged their vehicle, and deputies found a man who matched witness descriptions when they arrived.

Deputies tried to detain him and “he became physically uncooperative” and “became unresponsive” after he was detained, police said in a news release.

Deputies started providing medical aid and the man was taken to the hospital. Additional information about his condition was not available.

The 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the case, and the sheriff’s office will conduct a separate internal investigation.

The deputies involved will be placed on administrative leave, according to Grand Junction police.
