At about 11 p.m., officers received a call about a home invasion in the 1600 block of Gaylord Avenue in the southwest part of the city. Someone reported seeing the man who had broken into the home leave the scene in a Dodge Ram.
After locating the vehicle, officers followed the man — who the Pueblo County Coroner’s Office later identified as 36-year-old Luis Antonio Morales — as he left the car and entered an apartment building.

“Officers followed the suspect to an upstairs apartment and began knocking on the door, announcing themselves as police. The suspect opened the door, and an exchange of gunfire occurred,” according to the release.
The news release didn’t provide additional details on why the shooting began or whether the officers’ injuries were gunshots but said Morales died in the exchange. One of the two officers injured was transported to a hospital for non-life-threatning injuries. Both officers are now in stable condition.
