A Vail home with its own private observatory is on the market for $21.5 million.

The commercial-grade observatory, similar to those found on some university campuses, is a defining feature of the three-story, six-bedroom, nine-bathroom home, according to listing agent Shawn Byrne of Ron Byrne & Associates.

The home’s design was built around the property’s views and, in part, the cylindrical observatory, which sits above an elevator tower, he said.

Byrne told The Post on Thursday that the property has drawn significant interest since it went on the market.

“A lot of people are drawn to this house because of how unique it is,” he said.

“When you stand in it, you can quite literally feel the amount of time, effort, energy and money that went into making this dream come true for the owners.”

Architect Ned Gwathmey designed the home and it was built by Colorado-based Shaeffer Hyde Construction, Byrne said.

Built in 2010, the 9,000-square-foot home at 1979 Sunburst Dr. sits on 0.6 acres along the Vail Golf Course, with views of the Gore Range.

The home includes an elevator, fireplace, patio, balcony, vaulted ceilings, a landscaped tiered garden, fire pit and pond, according to the listing.

Astronomy is also reflected in the home’s interior design, Byrne said, with the theme appearing in subtle details and artwork throughout the home.

Vail is home to one of the largest ski resorts in North America and is known for its luxury real estate market where some properties are listed for tens of millions of dollars.

The golf course area is among the more sought-after neighborhoods, Byrne said. Buyers considering high-end properties in Vail often weigh proximity to town, access to outdoor activities and views.

Byrne described the market as “highly nuanced,” with prices varying based on factors including location, lot, design and access.

Several other homes and estates in the area have been sold between $20 million and $40 million.
