State and local search and rescue crews responded to Chatfield State Park, 11500 N. Roxborough Park Road, at 5:30 p.m. after bystanders called 911 about a man missing in the water, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The man, 48-year-old William “Sonny” Macaluso, was on a tube with the children when it overturned. The children were rescued by nearby family members and boaters, but Macaluso went under the water and did not come back up.
He was an experienced swimmer and was not wearing a life jacket, according to the sheriff’s office.
Rescue crews from Colorado Parks and Wildlife and South Metro and West Metro fire rescues searched the reservoir until 9 p.m., when it got too dark, and resumed searching Friday morning. Macaluso’s body was recovered just before noon.
