A CSU police sergeant was responding to a report that a person was “acting erratically” near Newton Plaza and found 22-year-old Brooks Bottenhorn on the west side of the microbiology building, the CIRT said in a news release. Bottenhorn fired one round into that building, then, still holding the handgun, went towards the sergeant. The sergeant shot at the student multiple times, hitting him at least once, then immediately rendered first aid, the release said.
