Construction crews will start work to add a lane to northbound Interstate 225 in south Denver this month, which state officials say will help with bottlenecked traffic near Interstate 25.

The $1.9 million project will add another through lane to the highway, for a total of four continuous lanes on northbound I-225 between I-25 and South Yosemite Street, the Colorado Department of Transportation said in a news release Monday. That stretch of the highway runs through Denver’s Hampden South neighborhood.

State officials said another lane will help with traffic caused by drivers from I-25 merging onto I-225 and will reduce delays and travel time.

Crews will also resurface the roadway and improve drainage infrastructure to help prevent flooding. Construction is expected ton continue into December.

Commuters can expect nighttime and daytime construction work throughout the project, generally from 9:30 p.m to 5:30 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

While officials do not expect major delays, drivers should plan for about an extra 10 minutes of travel time, CDOT leaders said.

Crews will close the highway shoulder during the day and intermittently close I-25 off-ramps to northbound I-225 at night. Workers will not close both northbound and southbound I-25 ramps at the same time, state officials said.

Drivers may also see single- and double-lane closures on northbound I-225 during night construction. Updated lane closures will be posted on COtrip.org.
