Search and rescue crews are looking for survivors after a single-engine plane crashed in a remote area of the San Juan Mountains near Telluride on Thursday, the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office said

Sheriff’s deputies, search crews, Telluride Fire and the Bureau of Land Management were called out for a plume of smoke coming from the north side of Dolores Peak, about 15 miles southwest of Telluride, the sheriff’s office said on Facebook.
It took several hours for first responders to reach the crash site after someone called 911 about smoke near the peak at 3:22 p.m. Thursday, and crews were able to reach the area and confirm a single-engine plane crash just after 7 p.m.
Denver air traffic controllers contacted San Miguel County emergency dispatch about a missing airplane minutes after the smoke was first reported, said Susan Lilly, public information officer with the sheriff’s office.
Officials have not confirmed that the missing plane is the one that crashed, and rescue teams are being sent in by helicopter to find out if anyone survived.
