A man was arrested Thursday and charged with driving on the U.S. 36 bikeway on Sunday after a video showed a car speeding along it in broad daylight.
The 44-year-old man was charged with one count of reckless endangerment, one count of reckless driving and one count of registration – fictitious plate, according to online court records. Reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor, is the most serious charge.
He was booked and released from the Boulder County Jail on Thursday evening, according to Boulder County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Carrie Haverfield.
The Daily Camera generally does not name defendants accused in misdemeanor cases.
“We appreciate the community members who submitted tips to try to help identify the suspect involved in this dangerous event,” Haverfield wrote in a statement.
Earlier this week, the Sheriff’s Office posted a video showing a black car driving on the bike path around 1:38 p.m. toward Boulder from the Davidson Mesa area. Officials estimate the car was traveling at speeds of up to 50 mph.
Witnesses told Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies that they saw cyclists moving off the bike path to avoid getting hit, according to an arrest affidavit.

When deputies found him at his Longmont home, the man admitted to driving his car on the bike path, the affidavit says. He never registered the car after buying it in July, according to the affidavit.

Drivers have cruised down the bike path before. In 2018, the Sheriff’s Office ticketed a woman who drove on the path after she said she mistook it for a frontage road.
The man previously pleaded guilty to one count of speeding 10-19 mph over the speed limit in a June 2024 case, and to one count of expired license plates in a November 2024 case, according to court records.
He is scheduled for a hearing on advisement in Boulder County Court on Sept. 30, court records show.
