Officials from Colorado Parks and Wildlife recovered the body of a man Monday evening after he went missing while boating on a private lake in Las Animas County.

He was one of four family members who were in a pontoon boat at Monument Lake Resort, which is about 40 miles west of Trinidad. The three other members of the family — two adults and a child — were taken to Mt. San Rafael Hospital in Trinidad.
No identities were immediately released and CPW did not say what condition the surviving family members were in. No details on exactly what happened on the water were provided.
The agency responded to reports of a possible drowning at the resort at 10:15 a.m. Monday, according to a CPW post on X. Officials were on the water an hour later and deployed a boat with side-scanning sonar to look for signs of the missing boater.
A CPW Marine Evidence Recovery Team was also deployed to the search effort. The recovery team, made up of three officers, was dispatched from Trinidad Lake State Park.
The search team also used an underwater remote operated vehicle to look beneath the surface.

At approximately 5:15 p.m., the search team located and recovered the victim in 17-foot-deep water. The lake temperature was 68 degrees, CPW said. The man’s body was turned over to the Las Animas County coroner for determination of cause and manner of death.
“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” said Floyd Duran, Trinidad Lake State Park manager and incident response commander. “We appreciate the professionalism and teamwork of our officers to bring this search and recovery operation to a respectful conclusion.”
Monument Lake Resort sits on 368 acres in the Sangre de Cristo range just north of the New Mexico line.
The resort, founded in 1937, has “adobe architecture, hand-chiseled timber interiors and the most breathtaking surroundings in Colorado,” according to its website.
