Bret Brachman-Goldstein, 32, of Montrose was climbing the 14,150-foot Mt. Sneffels when he fell, family members wrote in an obituary for Crippin Funeral Home.
Brachman-Goldstein’s identity was confirmed Monday by the Ouray County Coroner’s Office, the Ouray County Plaindealer reported. The coroner’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Investigators believe he was running on the mountain and fell on scree, or loose stones and rocky debris on the mountainside, the Plaindealer reported. His body was found by hikers on Thursday, and investigators believe he died the day before, on June 10.
Brachman-Goldstein moved to Montrose from Denver about five years ago and loved the outdoors, his family wrote.

“Bret found a home and a place where he was truly free among the peaks with a community of wonderful friends that shared a boundless enthusiasm for wild places only the mountains could provide,” family members wrote in his obituary.
Sneffels was one of his favorite Colorado peaks, they added.
“Bret had climbed this mountain countless times alone and with his friends and his soul eternally remains within her embrace.”
