The judge in Shilo Sanders\u2019 bankruptcy case will require that CU Buffs head football coach Deion Sanders be available virtually at 1:30 p.m. MDT Sept. 4 in case his testimony is needed in his son\u2019s trial.<\/p>\n

Deion Sanders\u2019 possible virtual court appearance is scheduled the day after the Buffs\u2019 season opener at Georgia Tech on Sept. 3.<\/p>\n

The judge\u2019s decision to make Deion Sanders available for testimony comes after his attorney, Harvey Steinberg, filed a motion to quash a subpoena requiring Sanders to testify. Judge Michael E. Romero held a hearing on Thursday regarding the motion to quash.<\/p>\n

The attorneys for each side in the case said they could be wrapped up with trial proceedings as soon as Sept. 3. Steinberg said Deion Sanders would not be available to testify until the afternoon on Sept. 4, preferably at 3 p.m. MDT or later, due to his obligations and travel plans for the CU Buffs football game at Georgia Tech. Romero decided to accommodate Sanders\u2019 schedule and required that he be available at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 4 for rebuttal testimony in the case.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s either that, or we keep him here,\u201d Romero said.<\/p>\n

Shilo Sanders is the subject of an ongoing bankruptcy case after he filed for bankruptcy in 2023 and now hopes to discharge more than $11 million in debt, which is owed to a former high school security guard named John Darjean. Darjean claimed Shilo Sanders assaulted him at a school in Dallas in 2015, when Shilo Sanders was 15 years old, and caused him permanent injuries. Darjean sued and won a $11.89 million default judgment in Texas in 2022 when Shilo Sanders neglected to show up in court.<\/p>\n

In the trial that begins on Monday, Romero will determine whether Shilo Sanders acted in self-defense that day or if his actions were willful and malicious. If the judge determines it was self-defense, Shilo Sanders could get out of paying the debt to Darjean. If not, he will be on the hook for the $11.89 million.<\/p>\n

During Thursday\u2019s hearing, Steinberg argued that Deion Sanders has no relevant testimony to provide regarding the day of the incident. Darjean\u2019s lawyers, who issued the subpoena calling Deion Sanders to testify, wanted him to testify about a phone call that day between him and Darjean. Instead of testifying about the phone call, Romero decided the court would use Deion Sanders\u2019 deposition regarding the call. All parties agreed.<\/p>\n

The evidence at trial will largely be limited to the day of the incident. Whether Deion Sanders will testify depends on how the trial goes and what evidence Romero allows in court.<\/p>\n

The trial will be held in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Colorado in Denver and is scheduled to run from Monday to Sept. 4.<\/p>\n
