{"id":3073,"date":"2026-07-27T10:04:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T10:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coloradospringsmoverss.com\/?p=3073"},"modified":"2026-07-27T10:04:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T10:04:10","slug":"critically-endangered-camel-hagrid-dies-at-denver-zoo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coloradospringsmoverss.com\/?p=3073","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Critically endangered\u2019 camel Hagrid dies at Denver Zoo"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div><strong>Getting your Trinity Audio player ready&#8230;<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>One of the Denver Zoo\u2019s \u201ccritically endangered\u201d camels died last week after an ulcer ate through his stomach, zoo officials announced Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradospringsmoverss.com\/?p=3071\">Today in History: July 27, horrific kidnapping, killing leads to \u2018America\u2019s Most Wanted\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Denver Zoo\u2019s animal care and veterinary medicine teams noticed Hagrid, a 6-year-old Bactrian camel, was showing signs of \u201cgastrointestinal discomfort\u201d early last week and began monitoring him, according to the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe received a physical examination, and teams provided supportive care and pain medications while working to determine the cause of his discomfort,\u201d zoo officials wrote on social media. \u201cDespite their best efforts, Hagrid passed away in his habitat on Tuesday evening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A necropsy revealed that the camel had an ulcer that ate through his stomach wall, according to the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance. His third stomach chamber may have also been displaced, which would have prevented food from moving through his digestive system normally, zoo officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Bactrian camels are critically endangered in the wild, according to the . They live in the Gobi and Gashun Gobi deserts of northwest China and Mongolia and are one of the rarest large mammals on Earth, according to the organization.<\/p>\n<p>Hagrid arrived at the Denver Zoo in July 2020 alongside his habitat mate, Sprout, when he was just three months old, Denver Zoo officials said. He also did it when we were on our way to bottle feed him. He was such a sweet boy and will be sorely missed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denver Zoo officials described Hagrid\u2019s death as \u201cheartbreaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>He \u201cquickly became a favorite among staff, volunteers and guests\u201d in Denver, zoo officials said. One of the zoo\u2019s animal care specialists wrote that she could \u201cnever deny that face all the treats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis playful personality and goofy spirit brought comfort, connection and joy to so many people,\u201d zoo officials said in the announcement. \u201cHe also served as an ambassador for his species and helped inspire our community to learn more about the importance of protecting wildlife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sprout, Hagrid\u2019s fellow camel, is being closely monitored and supported by zoo staff, according to the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance.
