On June 30, 1918, labor activist and socialist Eugene V. Debs was arrested in Cleveland, charged under the Sedition Act of 1917 for a speech in which he denounced U.S. involvement in World War I. (Debs was sentenced to 10 years in prison and disenfranchised for life; President Warren G. Harding commuted Debs\u2019 sentence to time served in 1921.)<\/p>\n
