Thunderstorms doused Colorado with rain and lightning on Wednesday, flooding some communities in the state\u2019s foothills and sending others on the Eastern Plains ducking for cover from hail, according to the National Weather Service.<\/p>\n

A tornado was spotted near Fleming \u2014 about 20 miles east of Sterling in northeastern Colorado \u2014 at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday and confirmed by local law enforcement, according to spotter reports from the weather service. Information on the twister\u2019s size and magnitude was not yet available Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

Roughly 6.5 miles southeast of Fleming, residents of Dailey reported 3-inch hail at 7 p.m. Wednesday, according to the weather service\u2019s severe storm reports map.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s about the size of a teacup, sitting between 2.75-inch hail the size of baseballs and 4-inch hail the size of softballs, according to the National Severe Storm Laboratory, which is part of the same federal agency as the weather service.<\/p>\n

Any hail larger than 1 inch across, the size of a quarter, is considered \u201csevere,\u201d according to the storm lab.<\/p>\n
