Wilma J. The home, which is a couple blocks from City Park in the Whittier neighborhood, was built in 1902 in the style of a classic \u201cDenver Square,\u201d which is known elsewhere as an American Foursquare. The Webbs purchased the home in 1971 and still live there now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistory often remembers the speeches delivered in public, but history is sustained by the quiet moments that happen in homes like this one,\u201d Councilwoman Shontel Lewis said before the vote.<\/p>\n<p>She reflected on the Webbs\u2019 role in Denver: \u201cYou didn\u2019t simply make history, you expanded who believed they could make it \u2014 including me,\u201d said Lewis, who is Black.\u00a0\u201cImagine the conversations this home has witnessed,\u201d she added. \u201cThe victories celebrated around the dinner table, the disappointments carried through the front door. The strategy sessions, phone calls \u2014 the moments when the burdens of leadership felt impossibly heavy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1991, Wellington Webb, then the city\u2019s auditor and a former state lawmaker, became Denver\u2019s first Black mayor. He served three terms in the mayor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Wilma Webb served in the Colorado legislature for six terms, focusing on advancing civil rights. She led the effort to establish a state holiday honoring the Rev. Wilma Webb spoke about when the couple first moved into the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was an ad in The Denver Post, and what it said was exactly this: \u2018Old house for sale.
