The Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is handing out $1,000 in gift cards each month to people who live or work in Denver and choose to commute or run errands without a car twice per week.<\/p>\n

To enter in the \u201cShift 2 City Wide\u201d program, participants must log two non-car trips each week that would otherwise be solo driving trips. That could mean walking, biking, scooting, carpooling or taking public transit instead.<\/p>\n

Each month, people who log at least two trips shifted out of cars each week will receive discounts at local businesses and restaurants. Their names will also be entered in a raffle for gift cards for those local spots, with multiple winners each month.<\/p>\n

The city created an online dashboard for residents to log their trips. It includes a trip-tracking page that shows metrics for each participant, including how much an individual has saved in money and carbon dioxide emissions.<\/p>\n

The initiative is meant to help people reduce their carbon footprint, save fuel, ease traffic congestion, improve air quality and increase physical activity, according to a news release from the transportation department.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith gas prices a challenge for many people right now, this is a great time to consider alternative modes of travel,\u201d said DOTI Executive Director Amy Ford, according to the release. \u201cGetting out of your car a couple of times a week, exploring new neighborhoods and connecting with nature and community, can also positively affect physical, mental, and environmental health.\u201d<\/p>\n

Participants can also connect their Strava accounts using the \u201cConnected Apps\u201d option in the online dashboard.<\/p>\n

For the Shift 2 program, DOTI is partnering with the city\u2019s Office of Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency and the Denver Regional Council of Governments. <\/p>\n
