Thornton police arrested a 28-year-old man late Wednesday night on suspicion of murder after a woman was stabbed to death at a gas station, according to law enforcement.

Officers were already responding at about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday to reports of a “physical disturbance” at a Maverick gas station in Thornton, 237 E. 120th Ave., when it escalated into a stabbing, according to a news release from the police department.
Paramedics took the victim, a 40-year-old woman with a stab wound, to the hospital, where she later died, police said. She will be identified by the Adams County Coroner’s Office. Police did not specify whether the man and woman knew each other.
The man who stabbed the woman fled the scene before police arrived, according to the release. Anthony Valenta was arrested later that night while driving a vehicle matching the description given by witnesses to the stabbing, police said.

As of Thursday morning, Valenta was being held in the Adams County Sheriff’s Detention Facility on suspicion of first-degree murder, according to inmate records. He was booked into the facility at 12:07 a.m. Thursday.
