Nearly two dozen flights were diverted from Denver to Colorado Springs on Monday as severe weather hit the metro, according to airport officials.

Four international and 18 domestic flights headed to Denver International Airport were diverted, according to a news release from the Colorado Springs Airport.
Several of the diverted flights encountered significant turbulence, prompting medical evaluations for at least five passengers after landing, airport officials said in the release. Colorado Springs Fire Department paramedics took one person to the hospital with unspecified injuries, according to the release.
The first diverted plane arrived in Colorado Springs at 4:40 p.m. Monday, and the last landed at approximately 8 p.m., airport officials said. All diverted planes left the Colorado Springs Airport by 10 p.m. Monday.
“We are the No. 1 diversion airport for DEN and handle a lot of diversion events, especially this time of year when there are unstable weather conditions at DEN,” Colorado Springs Airport spokesperson Aidan Ryan said.

Diversions are triggered when planes are unable to land at the destination airport for a variety of reasons, including weather, Ryan said.
Monday’s severe weather delayed 853 flights headed in and out of DIA and canceled 44, according to flight tracking data from FlightAware.
The delays were split nearly evenly between arriving and departing flights, but most canceled flights were scheduled to take off from DIA, according to FlightAware.
